[edit]

PodujevoPodujevë – I propose changing the article's title to "Podujevë", as it is the official name endorsed by the government, widely used by the people of Kosovo (of which the majority happen to be Albanian) and the name most commonly referenced.

According to WP:WIAN, we should identify the watershed moments in this location's history, and for Kosovo which this city is part of, the most recent watershed moment was the Declaration of Independence of Kosovo (whether its recognized or not). Referring to this guideline, then we should limit sources to those published after the Kosovo's independence (2008). In this case, Google Scholar and other criteria seem to favor the Albanian version of the name which is Podujevë or the definite form in Albanian of this name (Podujeva) more than the current name of the article (Podujevo).

Also WP:MPN suggests that "For articles discussing the present, use the modern English name (or local name, if there is no established English name), rather than an older one. " Given that the 2011 census reports that 98.9% of the population in this municipality is Albanian, the local name is, logically, the Albanian version of Podujevë (Podujeva).

The Google Scholar results show:

  • Podujevo [1] - 654 results
  • Podujevë [2] + Podujeva [3] - 388 + 427 = 815 results

The analysis of the results show that the Albanian versions of the name are used around 20% (19.75%) more frequently.

Therefore, I kindly ask for your support in approving this name change based on the facts I provided above. Typical Albanian (talk) 17:03, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you.The page should be renamed to Podujevë because it is the official name. Mitrovica02 (talk) 17:38, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support the request for move in line with WP:CONSISTENCY, as almost all Kosovar city names on Wikipedia are spelled using the Albanian orthography [1] [2] [3] [4] [5], .... Apart from that, I'll sustain the WP:MPN argument as well as the Google Scholar analysis. Evidently, the primary official and widely used name in the area is the Albanian one. • Oppose The city should not be renamed Podujevë. German and Austrian cities are rarely named using a letter characteristic of their language, ü and others. Podujeve or Podujevo is an option. This is EWP not SQWP. — Sadko (words are wind) 01:05, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're misrepresenting it. German cities in English don't have the characteristic ä, ö or ü because, in most cases, there is already an existing English name (e.g. derived from Latin). For instance, Munich instead of München, Cologne instead of Köln, etc. Minor cities like Göttingen still have the "ö" in the article's name.
That, however, does not justify overruling this request. What about Himarë and all Albanian cities that are of feminine gender in the Albanian language (Vlorë, Sarandë, Korcë, etc.)? AlexBachmann (talk) 01:25, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
