Best way to verify facts about a fictional character

I'm reviewing Twilight Sparkle for GA status and I need to verify the veracity of the plot summaries (it's basically one massive plot summary). Do I just have to do my own research to figure stuff out? Thanks in advance! Cessaune [talk] 01:16, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

The source for a plot summary is usually assumed to be the work itself, so verifying that information would likely mean watching the relevant episodes. TornadoLGS (talk) 02:01, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

Proper venue for discussing application of policy within a Wikiproject

I've been asking around on various pages to no avail. Recently there has been an ANI thread and several templates deleted due to a discussion that included how articles should cover active tropical cyclones (hurricanes, typhoons, etc). However, I think that how pages should cover active storms needs to be discussed further. The first suggestion was to take the matter to ArbCom, but it did not seem so serious. Next I suggested holding a discussion on the relevant project talk page (either Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Weather or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tropical cyclones), but others suggested holding it outside of project space to reduce bias and invite more outside opinion. One editor suggested WP:NPOVN but that seemed a poor fit. Following the suggestions of a couple others I did start a thread at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy), but I have gotten no response one way or the other there. Admittedly, that isn't quite the right place either as that page is more about discussing changes to policy. At this point I am not sure where this kind of discussion should be held. How to fix a problem with political party modules I have noticed

I've noticed that for templates such as {{Full party name with color|Janata Dal (United)}} and {{Full party name with color|Janata Dal (Secular)}}, the full name is only shown as Janata Dal. I see why this is important for {{Full party name with color|Labour Party (UK)}} and {{Full party name with color|Labour Party (Australia)}} maybe, but Janata Dal (United) and Janata Dal (Secular) have the same party name when their full names should include the bits in parentheses. A simple solution is to add a flag in the module that indicates whether the full party name should include text in parentheses, and consider that in all political party templates involving the full name. @C1MM: This can already be done with |dab=yes after a discussion at Template talk:Party name with color#Undisambiguated full name. It's currently only documented at {{Party name with color}} but it also works for {{Full party name with color}} which uses the same module. I need some help with our page. We created a page for our company but forgot the email address we used to sign up. We've tried all the ones we can think of, but none are working. Wikipedia doesn't use email addresses to log on, it uses usernames plus passwords. Hence if you look in the contribution history of the article you say you created, you should find that username. If you can't remember the password, just create a new account and mention on its new userpage that you previously edited with that other account. Note that accounts are for one person only: your use of "we" might be interpreted as if you think it is acceptable to have role-based accounts (e.g. for the PR department). It is not. Also, if you edit an article about your company, then by the T&Cs here, you must declare you are a paid editor. See WP:PAID. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:14, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

I wonder whether "We created a page for our company" merely means that Wikipedia has an article about your company and you think it was created by an unknown person at the company. We are an encyclopedia with millions of articles mostly written and maintained by volunteer editors with no affiliation with the subject. The IP address belongs to Bharti Airtel, which is a lengthy article about an Indian company. The editing history looks like it contains several COI edits, so it's likely that one of the redlinked usernames is the account in question. ~Anachronist (talk) 15:25, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

I need permision

Would it be ok if I was to write down the title or subtitle of an article on Wikipedia that I am reading for the sole purpose of remembering where I finished off so that I can continue reading the article or would that be a copyright violation?

No notification of replies to my comments

I recall I used to get a notification when someone clicked the "reply" link at the end of my comment without explicitly naming me in a {{ping}} or {{reply}} tag. I am running across replies that seem to have been made this way, but for which I never got notified. I don't recall changing anything in my user preferences, and I don't see any setting about this either. getting wikipedia article seen on google

Anyone know why my article isn't showing up on google? It's on Wikipedia but I can't get it to show up on google even when I type in the name of the article followed by wikipedia.

I find it weird that they say "all" timestamps when it's definitely not happening on every page... It's also just low enough contrast that it makes my brain tick (and is below WCAG standards!). With my custom CSS, which has custom colours for links, the timestamp links have the same colour as any other unclicked link, which has been wreaking havoc with my ability to quickly recognise which part of a signature is the username/talk page/etc. Suntooooth, it/he (talk/contribs) 02:15, 1 July 2024 (UTC)

Moving article from sandbox

I would like to move my article from the sandbox but there is no button to move it. I have changed appearance several times but still no avenue to move the article. Have done more than 15 edits and account was opened seven days ago. Please advise. SEQUINS24 (talk) 18:53, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

I have looked at User:SEQUINS24/sandbox, but to be honest it has zero chance of being accepted as an article at the moment. It could be moved to a WP:DRAFT article but would need a lot of work. @SEQUINS24: Perhaps you didn't see ianmacm reply to your question above, but it wasn't wise of you to move Bruce Ovbiagele to the article namespace at this time because it's not ready for article status. I've draftified the page for you to allow you more time to work on it and improve because leaving where it was would have almost certainly led to the page being either tagged or nominated for WP:DELETION. I suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:Notability (people), Help:Your first article, Help:Referencing for beginners for some general information on how you might try to improve the draft. You should also talke a look at Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, Wikipedia:Autobiography and Wikipedia:An article about yourself is not necessarily a good thing because those pages may also contain information that you might find helpful and might apply to your situation. I don't suggest you try to move the page back to the article namespace yourself again because doing so is almost certainly going to led to the page being nominated for deletion (absent any real significant improvements being made). Instead I suggest you submit the draft to Wikipedia:Articles for creation for review when you think it's ready. I want to ask is it ok if an editor is continuosly creating redirects of potential articles? Doesn't it take away the attribution from the editor which was about to start the article? What @Kumarpramit: is doing is just making redirects of badminton tournament articles, just to pose as the first to start the page, while others are doing hardwork of expanding it without their article tally going upwards. I suggest you forget the articlecountitis you appear to be suffering from, and get on with improving the encyclopaedia. Almost nobody cares how many articles you have started and how many you haven't, and unless there is major problem with it, almost nobody goes back and looks at who chanced to create the first version of an article. Clarification Regarding Translation Replacement

Hi there,

I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct place to ask, but maybe someone will be able to assist. I noticed that the article Egor Kreed, for example, was considerably empty in contrast to the one found on the Russian Wikipedia, and was looking to add content to it. However, when I was using the translation tool for other articles, I noticed that there is an option to replace an already existing page with a translation. My question for this is: what would be the potential impact of such an action? Would there need to be additional steps taken afterwards? I think it would be easier to do another translation (given how organized the tool is) but at the same time, I do not want to mess things up if that makes sense. Thanks in advance for the help. Despite what the notice says at the top of Egor Kreed, expanding an English Wikipedia article with a translation from an article in another language is a bad idea, unless you are satisfied that the text you are translating is supported by citations to the standard required in English Wikipedia (which tends to be a higher standard than many others).

If the text you are translating is so supported, then that's fine: you translate it, and cite the original sources (unless you can find equally good English ones, which are preferred if they exist). But if it is not, then what you will be doing is adding unsourced information to the article, which is generally not acceptable (and especially not when it is an article about a living person).

Looking at ru:Крид, Егор, at first sight it has lots of citations. But looking at them, an awful lot of them appear to be either to his own work, or to VK (service), which is a social media site: the bulk of citations in an article should each meet the triple criterion of reliability, independence from the subject, and having significant coverage of the subject. There may be some citations in the Russian article that meet these criteria, but if so, they are swamped by the refbombing of inferior or worthless sources.

Also, I notice that several claims in the first paragraphs are tagged with "источник не указан 423 дня", which I believe means "unsourced for xxx days". ColinFine (talk) 15:46, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

In most browsers, pressing ctrl and + on your keyboard will increase the displayed font size for most websites, (ctrl and - to decrease it). -- D'n'B-t -- 04:05, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

@Tenryuu I was wondering what the default is on that appearance icon (oo). I always have it set at the following: text: small, and width: wide. But that's only because it works best that way on my desktop. It's confusing when editing because putting in a "soft hyphen" tag (at end of a sentence) depends on one's settings. Import from another language Wiki

I have seen that my article de:Fadenwurminfektionen des Hundes was transferred (and translated) per c&p to Nematode infection in dogs, without using Wikipedia:Requests for page importation and therefore without article history. In the German WP this procedure is not allowed because it violates Wikipedia:Copyrights. I have no idea how it is handled in the English WP. Uwe Gille (talk) 11:16, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

Uwe Gille, Wikipedia copyright policy allows reuse of text, but says that credit to the authors should be provided, for example by including "a hyperlink (where possible) or URL to the page or pages you are re-using". This is also explained at Help:Translation#English Wikipedia policy requirements. Unlike in de Wikipedia Wikipedia:Requests for page importation are not required and appear to be unusual. Also, a slightly incomplete attribution for the work of editors on de.wp was added to the talk-page with this edit. Ideally that would include the exact revision number for the translated content. I can't login to my account in wikipedia!

Hello, I have been a member of Wikipedia for years.

For the past few days, I have been trying to log into my Wikipedia account, but after entering my username and password, I receive an error message. I am sure that I am entering both my username and password correctly, but each time I get the same response that either the username or the password is wrong!

When I click on the "Forgot password" option, it asks for my username and email address, but I do not receive any email in my inbox for resetting my password!!

If you can't recall your password and the email is not working, then nothing more can be done. You will need to create a new account. You can add a note to the new account's user page that you previously edited under the old name. RudolfRed (talk) 16:08, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello. The account in question is User: Mjdtjm with a capital M. Check whether that may be the source of the problem. That account does not have email access enabled, so the software cannot send you anything by email. You should enable email if you regain access, or on your new account if it comes to that. Abrupt GA Delist - Florida State University - No Discussion, no cooperation

I am requesting help with another editor who abruptly delisted the main Florida State University from GA status (which the article has had for years) while a GA Reassessment works through the process. I need to resolve concerns with non-free use in a couple sections, mainly and perhaps a style preference or two. Otherwise, the editor proposing the GAR is helpful and generally cooperative. Sirberus, you should probably follow the process for Disputing a reassessment at Wikipedia:Good article reassessment. I see you have raised your concerns with the closing editor on their talk page. The steps are

1. A GAR closure should only be contested if the closure was obviously against consensus or otherwise procedurally incorrect. A closure should only be disputed within the first seven days following the close.
2. Before disputing a GAR closure, first discuss your concerns with the closing editor on their talk page.
3. If discussing does not resolve concerns, editors should post at Wikipedia talk:Good article nominations and ask for review from uninvolved editors and the coordinators. TSventon (talk) 15:48, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

   The delisting editor (Real4jyy) shows up and says the reason the delisting was made is that no additional edits were made in two weeks...while the two active editors were waiting for a subject matter expert in non-free material to contribute to the review. Pardon me, but I live in the real world, and Wikipedia is a low priority for me and others who want to make Wikipedia better. It may takes months to finish the work. Frankly, the pattern of this individual appears to be to move from one GA review to another and delist whatever falls under their cursor. That is absurd. It takes substantial work to bring an article to GA status. Turnertown, Texas wrong categories

We have the same name

There are multiple artists along with other individuals with the same name “Matt Lambert” I have noticed that our information biography and such are getting mixed together. It happens quite often on platforms that we are mistaken for each other as we have parallel themes in some of our work. I noticed this happening particularly in the Spanish version.

On the English wikipedia, the best way to address this is to use the {{Edit COI}} template on the Article's talk page. You might use to say something like "Please remove XYZ because that refers to the Matt Lambert who is based in Madrid, not the one who is based in LA" and provide a link to a reliable source which makes it clear.

Read WP:PAID. You are required to make certain disclosures and follow certain rules when writing for pay. While not banned outright, the practice is looked down upon, and frequently produces articles which fail to meet Wikipedia's standards of neutrality and which therefore risk being rejected. Click on the link and read through the full guidelines. It explains both how to disclose a conflict of interest, and why it's important to do so. The short version is basically that in a case where you have a personal connection to something - it's your friend's company, you personally know the members of the band you're writing about etc - it will in many cases affect your ability to be neutral when writing about that subject, even when you are unaware of it and/or trying very hard to be neutral. @Otto Motev You may need a solid piece of writing advice. I have no idea what your usual writing style is, nor whether you are adaptable. Wikipedia requires flat, neutral, dull-but-worthy prose, with references. Obviously we may not accept copyright wviolations. Assuming your rock legend is still living we have very specific needs for referencing:

For a living person we have a high standard of referencing. Every substantive fact you assert, especially one that is susceptible to potential challenge, requires a citation with a reference that is about them, and is independent of them, in multiple secondary sources which are WP:RS, and is significant coverage. Please also see WP:PRIMARY which details the limited permitted usage of primary sources and WP:SELFPUB which has clear limitations on self published sources. Providing sufficient references, ideally one per fact cited, that meet these tough criteria is likely to make this draft a clear acceptance (0.9 probability). Lack of them or an inability to find them is likely to mean that the person is not suitable for inclusion, certainly today.

Yes, but note that the vast bulk of your sources must be wholly independent of the subject - not written, published or commissioned by them or their associates or agents, or based on interviews with them or press releases. Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources.

Note also that Wikipedia is not interested in what you personally know about the subject: every single piece of information you put in an article should have been published in a reliable source (and preferably, you should cite that source). ColinFine (talk) 22:57, 30 June 2024 (UTC)

Quaketornado, I have also gone in for a few of the articles and added interlanguage links to the nlwiki article (IMO, more complete than the one on papwiki) using the ill template. this will be *automatically* updated to link to an article about her on English language Wikipedia if such an article is created. The UCoC is not really something we enforce locally, because we already have local policies that are, in almost all cases, stricter than the UCoC. If your concern has a priovacy component you should report it to WP:ARBCOM by email, but if it does not you should in fact post at the relvant admin noticeboard such as WP:ANI. Release History on MATLAB page

On May 31st, 2024, MrOllie removed the "Release history" section on MATLAB under WP:NOTCHANGELOG. However, this list seems synthesized from multiple sources and more granular than what MATLAB provides on its own website without discussing bugs being squashed or intermediate snapshots. Similarly, ZFS has a section, and Adobe Acrobat has a dedicated version history page. Would it be best to revert the deletion, to make a reduced/redacted form to make it less of a changelog, or to split the version/release/number correlation chart into a separate page similar to the various Windows 10 updates? While the WP:BRD process allows you to revert, doing so would almost certainly be followed by a discussion on the article's talk page. AWB edit summary help

I originally posted this over at WT:AWB but haven't gotten an answer, and it's putting me off editing with AWB at the moment, so I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone who doesn't look at WT:AWB knows the answer.

I'd like to stop the addition of the [[WP:AWB/T|typo(s) fixed]]: text to edit summaries when using AWB's automatic typo fixes. Is there any way to do this? Using the "lock the default edit summary" option doesn't stop it from being added.

I dislike it because my default edit summary is already "minor fixes", which covers typos/caps fixes/etc, and because it unnecessarily clutters my edit summaries. There may be a good reason to use a standardised wording, such as allowing AWB edits to be tracked more easily, but the AWB page watchers will know more about that than I do.

@Aditya Bijarniya: can you clarify what you mean by "not visible on the internet page"? Are you unable to find or see the page anymore yourself? Or are you just asking why the page goes not show up in internet search engines like Google? If you're asking about why it does not show up in internet search engines like Google then even if it remains in article space it is not likely to do so until either 90 days have passed or someone has marked it as patrolled per WP:NOINDEX. There isn't really much you can do to speed up this process other than wait although if the article is clearly WP:Notable and without significant problems perhaps people in the WP:NPP team are more likely to pass it quickly. It sounds as if you might have the (very common) misunderstanding that the article on Kailash Satyarthi "belongs to" him or his team: it does not. Articles do not belong to anybody, and the article may be edited by almost anybody in the world except Satyarthi or people associated with him. If you are Satyarthi or somebody associated with him, then you have a conflict of interest, and you should not directly edit the article, but you may make edit requests. timestamps in signatures greyed out

It's intentional, as they now act as links to the comment, for copying to other discussions and such. They have the css class "ext-discussiontools-init-timestamplink" if you wish to target them in your custom css. WelpThatWorked (talk) 14:07, 1 July 2024 (UTC)

Hello, Msffga18. First, if you own the platforms, then you have a financial stake, and Wikipedia regards you as a paid editor: you must make a formal declaration of this on your user page: see the link I gave for how to do this.

Because of your conflict of interest, you should not edit directly, but you may make an edit request on the talk page of an article you want to change, and in time an uninvolved volunteer editor will see your request and decide what to do. Your case will be stronger if you can cite a source where somebody wholly unconnected with you or your platforms has chosen to write about your availability on those services (more than just a listing or mention). If it appears to the editor that your purpose is purely promotion, and there is no encyclopaedic value to adding the platforms, then they will not do so. ColinFine (talk) 14:24, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
